How to Read This Book
Welcome to The ProFacet Book.
Gemstone faceting sits at the intersection of three disciplines: 3D solid geometry (slicing a crystal with intersecting planes), physical optics (Total Internal Reflection, refraction, and spectral dispersion), and workshop craft (turning an index gear, setting a mast angle, and cutting until facets meet at a razor-sharp point).
Most documentation forces you to choose between a superficial button list and a dry programming manual. This book is written differently. It is structured as a 16-chapter, two-part online textbook: Part I takes you step by step through the Visual Gem Cutter's Studio with zero coding required, and Part II teaches the FSL and Lua scripting languages with live, interactive 3D gemstone playgrounds right on the page.

The Two Parts of This Book
The Visual Gem Cutter's Studio
Designed for cutters who want to work visually with a mouse or trackpad—no coding required. We start with how a physical faceting machine works, cut a complete stone from scratch, and master every visual tool in the Studio.
- Ch 1 · How Gemstones Are Cut: The Dop, Gear, Angle & Light
- Ch 2 · Guided Tutorial: Cut Your First Round Brilliant
- Ch 3 · Interactive Slicer: Drum Dials, Jump, +Meet & Edgepoints
- Ch 4 · CAM Preform Studio: Visual Preforms & All 28 Outlines
- Ch 5 · Symmetry Assistant: Decode Any Classic Book Diagram
- Ch 6 · Seeing Light: The 8 Shading Modes & Diagnostic Maps
- Ch 7 · Optical Lab: 19-Angle WebGPU Analyzer & GPU Optimizer
- Ch 8 · Workshop & Cloud: Printable Sheets, Import/Export & Sync
FSL & Lua — Parametric & Algorithmic Design
Every visual action in Part I generates clean FSL (Faceting Specification Language). Part II teaches both FSL and Lua side by side so you can write material-adaptive designs, custom meetpoint chains, and procedural cuts.
- Ch 9 · The Dual Engine: FSL & Lua Side by Side in 10 Minutes
- Ch 10 · Core Foundations: 3D Coordinates, Settings & Symmetry
- Ch 11 · Facets & Tiers: The Three Gem Design Styles
- Ch 12 · Point Helpers:
cp(),gp(),mp(),ep(),prz()&surface() - Ch 13 · Math & Optics: Vectors, Planes & RI-Driven Angles
- Ch 14 · Functional FSL: Lambdas, Pipelines & Platonic Solids
- Ch 15 · Stone Reflection: Live Mesh Queries via
stone() - Ch 16 · Complete Lua Guide: Loops, Tables & Procedural Cuts
